I know I checked Her Stride Titans several times yesterday and there was nothing. This morning I check it and there are 30+ posts on the Battle of Britain. People have zoomed in and are acting as referees at the same time. Very cool. Right now it looks like three or four players have learned how to judge arguments.

Don't you find judging argument simple? You just look at it and say "Strong!" "Weak" or something and roll. It's easy.

The speed that people are taking on leadership roles in this game is a new phenomenon in Matrix Gaming. Until now players have patiently waited for the referee to tell them when to send in turns. Referees have in effect "owned" their games. Here Stride Titans is even more communal story telling than other Matrix Games.

Judging is really fun and easy. I've been using some matrix-style stuff in my own tabletop games, though thus far only in solo sessions to resolve what happens between games or off-stage amongst NPCs.

My solo MG "How to succeed at business without really trying" works but it produces a straight line to my goal. My hero, John Smith, is slowly moving up the ladder. For the story to be 1) realistic, and 2) interesting, John needs to experience problems. In the Movie the fellow got into advertising (big mistake). My hero is in accounting. I think that the villan, CEO Lyle Nogood, should decide he is an enemy and start working to destroy him. This will put the story into a crisis. Smith either advances or dies.

Solo games work - but I don't think they will be to everyone's taste. I like arguing with myself.

I probably would not enjoy a purely solo game, but it is an enjoyable way to add more gamelike mechanics to even planning the games I run for my PCs. It makes me feel a bit more like a player in my own world and that is fun.

Based on encouragement from one player I expect we will run at least one active session as a Matrix game, possibly something that takes place in the spirit world in my setting where anything is possible...

I generally like to see consistancy in judging. It makes the playing field level(er) than the somewhat chaotic turn that #11 is turning into. Mind you, I am not necessarily against chaos, but I think it's possible that it might be detrimental. Take, for instance, the first argument of the turn. todfox ruled it as average, while cihuacoatl thought it strong. I can see both of their points, but the issue remains that a single unifying judge would see things more uniformly.

Plus, this avoids (or at least minimizes) acrimonious attacks between players. "Well, he didn't judge my argument highly enough, so I'm going to give him a crappy rating for his."

Of course, I'm somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to worldbuilding for games, and while I'm in favor of player contributions, the very idea of worldbuilding via Matrix Gaming (or, for that matter, via some of the more avant-guard Forge games) rankles for me. Personal taste, I know, but I appreciate immersion in a world which has been birthed by a single mind, rather than a committee that includes myself.

Acrimony between players drives matrix arguments out of the game. All arguments get ruled as very weak so they only happen on a roll of 6. What this does is slow games down to a crawl. In the end it won't change the outcome. It just gives the dice gods more say.

This happened to my wife in a War of the Worlds Matrix Game I did in Nashville TN in the 90's. The players were one another's referees. The men opposite my wife ruled all her arguments very weak so she stopped making them and concentrated in blowing them into little bits with her Martian walkers. They made a big mistake! They should have looked at the rules behind the MG and seen that the Martians had everything. It was the humans who needed the arguments not Terri.

One thing that can be said for this turns anarchy is that it is "realistic." My take on the world is that it is made up of the actions we all make. Billions of voices not agreeing. Yet in this chaos is order. Now that's logical design for you!

Glad you liked the fun. I had a feeling something like this would happen when the flood gates were unhinged.

WOW! It's the end of the day and the post count is up to 68 on the Battle of Britain turn. If I hadn't been swamped with emergency walk ins today I might have kept up. As it is I'll wait for the summary of events.

We need some reporter players to pull pieces together into stories. Maybe we can start the equivalent of the Daily Planet on the Wiki? I'd subscribe.
